Word Association: Darius Washington Jr.

This is one of our favorite moments in recent sports memory. Cruel? Slightly. But it also conveys the emotion only found in college sports.

The player is Memphis' Darius Washington Jr. The setting is the 2005 C-USA championship game. A win would give Memphis the automatic bid to the NCAA Tourney. Lose, and the season's over.

The word that comes to mind? Let us know in the comments.

Tug-job to Josh at The Beautiful Game for the idea.

I mean "Choke" is really the only appropriate answer.

That or "Shaq-Like Free Throw Shooting."

I saw that same thing happen to CS Fullerton against Long Beach State two years ago in the Big West tournament. Just brutal.

tom,

thanks for bringing that up.

first off, let me say that as a UW fan, Gonzaga is a geographical rival, so I already had a distate for Morrison. hence calling him a derogatory name.

But the difference is simple:

Morrison's play didn't cost his team that game. (I believe it was batista who threw the ball away against UCLA). Morrison's crying almost shows up his teammate, whereas Washington Jr's missed shots directly cost Memphis the game.

had Morrison made the error that led to GU's collapse against UCLA and he then cried, then me calling him a pussy would be incredibly hypocritcal.

but since that wasn't the case, this is like comparing apples and oranges.

morrison's crying still does show the emotion of college sports, but his, to me anyway, was at the expense of his teammate.
