We've been to some pretty good sporting events -- Giants and Niners playoff games, great college hoops games and even some fun hockey action.
But it's college football season now and it's time to talk about some of the best college football games you've seen in the flesh.
Ours? Probably the 2003 Apple Cup:
In the 2003 Apple Cup, Washington State (ranked No. 8) entered the game with a 9-2 record and a shot at the Rose Bowl while Washington, at 5-6, were trying to avoid their first losing season since 1976. WSU had a six-point lead until UW true freshman Corey Williams caught a diving pass in the end zone with 1:10 remaining in the game, which gave the Huskies a 20-19 lead after a successful PAT. On the ensuing drive, the Huskies' Marquis Cooper intercepted a pass by WSU quarterback Josh Swogger and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown, which after a successful PAT resulted in a final score of 27-19.It's the only time we've been on collegiate goal posts. Fun times.

ReplyDeleteBad Memory - I was at the Michigan-Colorado game when Kordell Stewart threw the Hail Mary pass to Michael Westbrook...
Good Memory - 1997 when Charles Woodson brought back the punt against Ohio State...we knew that sewed up the Heisman for him...then we stormed the field after the game...
Lehigh vs. Hofstra - 1st round playoff game in 2001.
ReplyDeleteLouisville vs Rutgers 2 years ago. The one where the judge missed but Louisville was offside. Then he made it the second time and pointed to the SkyCam.
ReplyDeletePitt-Penn St., 1987 at Pitt Stadium. PSU driving and on Pitt's 36 with :20 left, Pitt hanging on to a 3-0 lead. PSU QB Knizer intercepted by Billy Owens for a 69 yard TD. Pitt wins 10-0. Game Over!
ReplyDeleteBest game I left early from: In 1989 in Morgantown. WVU leading 31-9 so I bailed. Pitt comes back to tie 31-31. I'll never forgive myself for that one.
Speaking of the Stewart hail mary, I was in Yager Stadium in 2002 when Big Ben launched a 70+yard hail mary that was tipped and caught for a touchdown.
ReplyDelete1993 KU vs. Nebraska in Lawrence. NU was ranked #1 and up 21-14 in the 4th. KU drove down the field behind June Henley and scored to make it 21-20 with about 30 seconds left. KU went for 2 and didn't get it. Sucky outcome for me as a KU fan, but still a damn good game.
ReplyDeletevirginia-georgia tech 2001 - I can't find a recap or anything but here's what I remember - it was a relatively normal game until the 4th quarter, when the two teams combined for something like 35 points. UVA won it on a hook and ladder play and I (along with 65,000 others) went crazy. It was definitely the most exciting game I ever saw.

ReplyDeleteucla 13 - usc 9. after taking crap all year from the spoiled crosstown second choicers, we finally stuck it to them where it hurt - denied them a chance at a national championship.

I have a few. First was the 1991 Apple Cup. The game was a blowout, but it capped off a perfect season. I remember how awesome the defense was. Steve Emtman was unstoppable, and they put a beating on Drew Bledsoe. I also remember sitting in a terrible rainstorm as Corey Dillon single handedly destroyed San Jose St. He had 222 yards rushing and 83 yards receiving in the first quarter. I believe he had another 70+ yard screen pass returned because of a penalty. It was an amazing performance.
ReplyDeleteMichigan 27 Penn State 25 in 2005 in Ann Arbor. Penn State's only loss that season. U of M drives 50+ yards in 53 seconds to set up the game winning TD as time expired. All made possible because of Lloyd Carr whining for 2 extra seconds to be added to the clock earlier in the quarter.
ReplyDeleteThere are too many bad, but good is prob Maryland vs. Boston College last year. BC's Top 10, Terps unranked. Big lead for Maryland, just dominating. BC comeback, Terps hold em off.
