A riddle:
How can you make the BCS any worse?
Are Verne Lundquist, Mike Patrick and Ron Franklin calling the games?
Then you can't.
We've had enough of FOX's coverage of these so-so BCS games that seem to becoming less interesting every year. Not only are the matchups not that enticing, but we have FOX -- which covered zero college football games all year -- sucking the life out of the games with drab announcers, bad camera shots and no passion.
SI.com's Stewart Mandel -- are you reading Stewart Mandel yet? We've basically been doing free advertising for the guy the last few months! -- wrote that the installment of the fifth BCS game is killing TV ratings.
BCS officials can't be pleased with these early returns. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that the addition of a fifth BCS bowl can officially be declared an abject failure.
Seven of the nine lowest-rated games of the BCS era have now taken place over the past three seasons. That coincides with the beginning of the current cycle in which the BCS added a fifth game and turned the national championship game into a stand-alone event.
It also happens to coincide with the BCS' contract with FOX. Coincidence?
Sorry, but we can't take a broadcast team of Matt Vasgersian and Tim Ryan seriously. And by "we," we mean anyone with two ears and a passion for college football.
admittedly they all suck, but at least joe buck wasnt in the booth with them.
ReplyDeletejust trying to put a little perspective on this

Well written and so right. Last night was a complete disaster. Worst broadcast I've ever seen.
ReplyDeletehow many reaction shots of the bands were there during the game? maybe the UT no-huddle prevented them from doing replays but that was atrocious
ReplyDeleteYes. We know Matt V. McCoy and Shipley are roommates. And all the Gatorade shots.
ReplyDeleteHere is the kicker. 2 min. left and Matt Vassomething says that Texas may have time to go down and score "or maybe get into field goal position". Uh... They were down by 4 points.
Those two guys are the best they have. Yikes.
Fox is dreadful and all, but I blame the shittiness of the teams in these bowl games. You can't polish a turd.
ReplyDeleteHalftime was the worst. ESPN couldn't show highlights so they had a hodgepodge roundtable talking about football while FOX showed freaking marching bands. Ugh...
ReplyDeleteat least these games won't be on Fox much longer
ReplyDeletetotally right, noah. joe buck is about the only person who could fuck this thing up any more.
ReplyDeleteDid anyone else notice at the beginning of the game when one of them said Terrelle Pryor was the "z factor"(Nissans version of "x factor"), followed by 10 seconds of silence because the other didn't know what to say?
ReplyDeleteally like the camera work and production by the "C" team Fox brought in. Nothing like crowd shots, player close ups, or close-ups of a Gatorade jug while A FREAKING PLAY IS BEING RUN!!!
ReplyDeletei hate fox's coverage. matt vers...whatever saying the pass interference call on texas was bad b/c the pass wasn't catchable, then watching the replay and saying the officials did a great job making the right call. really? holy crap do these guys SUCK. bevo chewing on grass would be better to listen to.
ReplyDeleteCBS really needs to find the bucks to get these games. Tell me another network that lets the GAME be the focal point of the telecast.
ReplyDeleteadam, you're probably right, but I do think that ABC/ESPN will be better than Fox. Can't remember if it changes next year or the year after.
ReplyDeleteWe've known this about FOX for 20 years. They took the lead in bastardizing sports events and the rest of the networks have followed.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't help that the game doesn't mean shit. These games will fly during the holiday season. After Jan 1, any buzz is gone. Just give me the Morning Headlines.
Just so people know (yes, I am a numbers dork) I counted and then broke down of the number of times the cameras flashed to the band of each team during the Ohio State-Texas game. The total number of band sightings were 67 (Texas had 36, Ohio State had 31)!!!! Additionally, the break down of each quarter is below:
ReplyDelete1st quarter – 9
2nd quarter – 18
3rd quarter – 14
4th quarter - 26
i would venture to say anything with Matt Vasgersian is intolerable.
ReplyDeletelove those numbers, aaron! great work getting the stats!
ReplyDeleteHow did Mike Patrick get involved?
ReplyDeleteFox totally blows. The product placement is disgraceful and only Fox knows how to do it that blatantly. There were barely any replays, and the 4 plays (that I counted) they didnt even TELEVISE and there weren't and replays of those! Unbelievable.
ReplyDeleteFor my part, I turned the game off at the half as I couldn't stomach one more minute of FOX and it's crappy coverage. Vanilla commentators, horrible camera angles. I felt like I needed to tilt my head to the side. Horrible commercials over and over again. I felt like I was being bludgeoned...
ReplyDeleteThe broadcast of the Iowa-GT game was even worse! I stopped counting how many times the commentators mispronounced names because there were so many. Seriously? Marvin McKnight and Terry Stross? That, and Eddie George forgot everything about the game except the fact that he picked the Hawkeyes to win.
ReplyDeleteRight now they should try to get feedback with social media and trying new ideas and different things to get people interested on it again.
