The Best: Baseball city

Welcome to "The Best," a new series from the people who brought you "Would You Do," "Blogger Interviews" and "What Really Grinds My Gears."

It's just what it sounds like: what's the best ______? "Best" is such a subjective word and that's really the point -- let's get you guys talking! If this works, there will be intelligent, thoughtful debate on the day's topic. And if it doesn't work, well, back to the drawing board.

The MLB trade deadline is today (woohoo!) which is the unofficial day that teams separate themselves as contenders, pretenders or neither (like we're so freakin' awful this day has little significance. See: Nationals or Giants).

As a result of a team's moves, its home attendance usually spikes or dramatically drops making it pretty obvious who and where fair-weather fans exist. Like if Pittsburgh trades Jason Bay, we might see an attendance drop at PNC Park during the last two months of the season. If Seattle trades Arthur Rhodes, someone will undoubtedly ask, "The Mariners had Arthur Rhodes? Huh. I did not know that."

So that gets us to this: Which city has the best fans?

Attendance, of course, is not the only factor. The Dodgers are among the best-attended organizations and they toss around colorful balls and may or may not know that they're at a baseball game, not a beach.

We'll also take into account the way those in attendance root. Are they appropriately dressed? Are they knowledgeable fans, do they know the game? Are they passionate or obnoxious? There is a difference.

We don't know about you, but we get wood when we see an older dude sitting in the upper deck by himself wearing a pin-clad hat with a radio in hand and a score book on the lap. Big-time wood.

Also: What do a team's fan do outside of their home yard? Do they travel to road games? Put up flags in front of their homes? How does the city as a whole rally around the team?

So many things to consider. Here's our list:

5. Cleveland
4. Boston
3. New York Yankees
2. Chicago Cubs
1. St. Louis

Now you play. But don't even think about saying L.A. or Atlanta. That city can't even sell out a playoff game.

I have a tie between Boston & St. Louis...

Cleveland???...no way!!!...look at the ballpark...there are so many empty seats...you can't give tickets to an Indians game for free...Cleveland Indians fans are horrible!!!

  2. 1. STL
    2. NYY
    3. CHC
    4. BOS
    5. LAA

Boston is full of annoying homers that don't know shit about baseball outside of Boston. People in St. Louis and New York know about baseball from all over the country.

    1. Milwaukee
    2. St Louis
    3. Philadephia

26 sellouts this year, 10 in a row... what?!?!

  4. 1. Yankees
    2. Cardinals
    3. Red Sox

You can't include the Cubs because the "fans" that go to the games are just drunks trying to get laid that have no idea who Ryan Theriot is. But, by gum, they loved Sammy Sosa and that chick in the RF bleachers taking her pink Cubs tank top off!

  5. No argument on the top two. From going to road games, Cards fans certainly come off as the best.

If nothing else, Cubs fans get the second spot for attending night games at Wrigley in April. That is not a fun time. But, if you bring your girl, you get to watch a ball game and satisfy your cuddle quota. I'm pretty sure that half the crowd at a White Sox game are people who couldn't get tickets to the Cubs.

I'd be careful about throwing up the Yankees fans here. Like the Cowboys and the Steelers, there is as much reason (more, in my case) to hate the fans as the team. I'm not saying all Yankee fans...but so many of them are either mongoloids (yelling at people for leaving early or screaming at people to remove their hats during God Bless America...leaving aside that the song is a propaganda piece and not an official anthem, there's no irony in that, right), glory hunters, or both, that they drown out the good fans.

I agree that the Braves fans are the worst...although, those tomahawks are a good way to burn nervous energy.

    Which one is Titletown?

    1. St. Louis (so they say)
    2. Cincinnati (trust me, I used to live there)
    3. Milwaukee (the fans are the most knowledgeable of the game than any other city and they are polite too)
    4. Boston (fans are rude but loyal, and this was during a Mariners game)
    5. Anaheim (Angels fans are loyal and polite too (not seen much in SoCal and this is from personal experience from the early 90's when they were a "California" team; plus they come for the first pitch and leave when the game is over, unlike Dodgers fans)

Worst: Bronx, NY, spoiled fans who whine and cry about everything

Runner-up for worst: Flushing, NY, filled with bitter people who are still are p*ssed about the Dodgers leaving town and that they are second fiddle to the Bronx team.
